I noticed these pathetic trees while on a day-dream road trip through Manhattan.  I think this was on 7th avenue where it passes through Chelsea.  Trees on the eleven big avenues of New York appear to be kind of new idea, since none of them look more than ten or fifteen years old.  The side streets, of course, are shaded by really lovely, healthy hardwoods, but these spindly things on the busy north-to-souths look positively beleaguered.  What a terrible place to have to be a tree, and remain planted amid all the commotion and inevitable abuse.
